Ingredient notes

overhead view of ingredients required to cook jasmine rice in the instant pot
  • rice- this recipe is specific for white jasmine rice. For basmati rice, see this post. For brown rice, see this post.
  • water- for added flavor, you can use stock or homemade bone broth for the cooking liquid
  • salt- I like to add it before cooking so that each grain of rice is flavored
  • butter or coconut oil- optional to make it extra fluffy; add it after cooking through while fluffing up the rice!

Step by step directions

1. Rinse the rice- Jasmine rice has a lot of starch stuck to the surface, and this can cause it to have an unpleasant texture. Rinsing the rice helps to get rid of extra starch. To rinse, cover the rice with 2 inches of water. Stir or swirl, then carefully decant the water. Repeat 3-4 times, until the water is no longer cloudy.

2. Add ingredients to pot- To the stainless steel insert of your Instant Pot, add the rinsed rice, water, and salt. Make sure the rice is not stuck to the side of the pot, and that it is all submerged in the water.

3. Cook- Place the lid on the Instant Pot, set the steam release handle to the 'sealing' position, then pressure cook on high pressure for 2 minutes. When the Instant Pot beeps, allow for a full natural pressure release (around 15 minutes). When the pin drops, you can open the lid.

4. Fluff up the rice- add in butter or coconut oil, and use a rice paddle to fluff up the rice. Enjoy!

Recipe tips

  • Water ratio- For the stove top and rice cooker, we use a 2 cup water: 1 cup rice ratio. However the Instant Pot does not allow as much liquid or steam to escape, therefore we use a ratio of 1 cup rinsed rice : 1 cup water. Extra water causes the rice to be gummy, whereas less water causes it to be slightly crunchy.
  • 6 vs 8 quart- this recipe was tested in both 6 quart Instant Pot and 8 quart Instant Pot models.
  • extra flavor- you may swap the water for chicken stock or bone broth for extra flavor in your rice
  • meal prep- rice may be cooled and stored in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat until steaming hot, and reheat only once.
  • expansion- since rice expands, you should not fill your Instant Pot more than half full.
  • yield- Instant Pot rice seems to yield a smaller volume when cooked than stove top. For 1 ½ cups of jasmine rice, we get roughly 2 ½ to 3 cups cooked rice.

FAQ

Why don't we use the 'rice' setting on the Instant Pot?

It comes down to personal preference; in a side-by-side comparison, I found rice cooked on high pressure (using the 'manual' or 'high pressure' button) came out softer and more fluffy than rice cooked on the 'rice' program.

Can I cook instant rice using this method?

No, this method is specific to uncooked, regular jasmine rice.

How long do you cook jasmine rice in the Instant Pot?

2 minutes on high pressure with a full natural pressure release. Allow 5 minutes to come to pressure and 15 minutes to release, so approximately 22 minutes total time.

What water ratio do you use for rice in the Instant Pot?

For jasmine rice, we use 1 cup of rice and 1 cup of water; keep in mind that the rice is rinsed in a fine mesh strainer and will be a bit wet. If you do not rinse your rice, you'll need to add a few tablespoons of extra water.

Flavor variations

  • herb lemon- zest of ½ a lemon, 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1 teaspoon dried oregano; add ½ juiced lemon after cooking
  • saffron- 1 pinch saffron threads soaked in ¼ cup boiling water for 5 minutes; ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • cilantro lime- zest of 1 lime; add ½ cup cilantro leaves and juice of ½ a lime after cooking
  • pesto- ¼ cup pesto; stir in fresh basil and slivered almonds after cooking
  • turmeric- ½ teaspoon turmeric, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Storage and reheating

If not handled properly, rice can be at risk of growing harmful bacteria that can make you sick. If you follow the following steps, you will be perfectly fine:

  • Get it into the fridge within 2 hours of cooking- do not let it sit at room temperature for too long as this is the temperature at which harmful bacteria can replicate
  • Store in an air tight container for up to 4 days
  • Reheat until steaming hot
  • Do not reheat more than once

Freezing

Rice freezes well. You can freeze it in meal prep containers or in freezer bags (I love these re-usable silicone freezer bags!). Some people add a few tablespoons of water when re-heating freeze/thawed rice, as it does end up slightly drier than fresh rice.

The rice cooker has made its way from the run-down kitchen of a single parent's home to that of every family in America. While we have all heard of the wonderful time-saving feature this appliance can provide, no one seems to be talking about the fact that it makes cooking rice so easy! With just a few simple steps, anyone can enjoy the same amount of satisfaction that their parents used to get from a traditional stove and a deep pot.
